Since 1997, the Ecosystem Management Decision Support (EMDS) system has been used around the world to support environmental analysis and planning in many different application areas, and it has been applied over a wide range of geographic scales, from forest stands to entire countries. An extensive sampling of this diversity of applications is presented in section 2, in which EMDS application developers describe the varied uses of the system. These accounts, together with the requisite background in section 1, provide valuable practical insights into how the system can be applied in the general domain of environmental management.

Wild salmon, trout, char, grayling, and whitefish (collectively salmonids) have been a significant local food and cultural resource for Pacific Northwest peoples for millennia. The location, size, and distribution of urban areas along streams, rivers, estuaries, and coasts have directly and indirectly altered and degraded wild salmonid populations and their habitats. Although urban and exurban areas typically cover a smaller fraction of the landscape than other land uses combined, they have profound and often grave consequences for local ecosystems, aquatic and terrestrial populations, and water quality and quantity. This book integrates science with policy and social aspects of urbanization to provide a comprehensive review of how human activities in urban and rural residential areas alter aquatic ecosystems and affect wild salmonid populations and their habitats in North America’s Pacific Northwest.  This book also outlines many successes and challenges of approaches to salmonid rehabilitation in Oregon and suggests how those lessons learned may be relevant elsewhere globally for both salmonid and non-salmonid waters. The book additionally discusses potential strategies for minimizing future urban impacts and rehabilitating aquatic ecosystems and habitats to support healthy salmonid populations in urban areas. This book also draws from global findings and provides information relevant to maintaining and rehabilitating aquatic ecosystems in temperate areas worldwide.                  .

This book is dealing with a number of issues under the broad subject matter of protected area focusing on the policy of collaborative management as a means to augment the forest conservation activities and enhance community development in Bangladesh. Comprehending the malfunction of traditional forest management in Bangladesh, the government explored and implemented few alternative strategies for better management of the country’s forest resources. Establishing protected areas was the first initiative of such strategy. But simple declaration of protected areas has not functionally worked in the prevention of forest degradation. Because, local communities face hardships after a forest is notified as protected area. This is mainly due to the imposing of strict regulations that curb the flow of forest resources for their livelihoods. Therefore, considering the pragmatism, the government started collaborative management approach with the active participation of local communities in five protected areas as pilot projects. Studies on the pilot sites, covered in the book emerged with the success stories of protected area co-management, both in terms of community development and biodiversity conservation. Significant level of development was noticed in the socio-economic conditions of the surrounding communities as an impact of this new strategy. Empowerment and improved social dignity of women participants signifies the initiation of co-management approach. The principles of participatory governance were found reasonably well reflected in legal and policy frameworks. Based on the lessons from the studies, a general metaphysical model, namely ‘Spider-web model of protected area co-management’ has been developed that can be potentially applicable in countries where local communities rely heavily on protected areas. We hope that the contents of the book provide useful information for policy makers developing more comprehensive programs for protected area management in Bangladesh.

The Landforms and Landscapes of France provides an informative and attractive overview of the most scenic landscapes of France. The geodiversity of France is emphasized, for example the glacial landscapes of the Mont-Blanc Massif, the volcanoes of the French Massif Central, the chalk cliffs and sand dunes of the Atlantic coast, the granitic landscapes of Corsica or the lagoons and coral reefs of French Polynesia.
